Green card, the first step

This is a partial list of ways to obtain a green card in the United States:

• Family Sponsorships: A related U.S. citizen or green card holder sponsors
• Employment sponsorships: Self-sponsorship or employer sponsorship
• Green card lottery: 50,000 green cards are allotted each year
• Investors: Foreign investors in the United State economy may apply
• Adoption: Children under 16 years old adopted by a United States Citizen (USC ) or Long-term Permanent Resident (LPR)
• Private Bill: Congress grants green card because of humanitarian factors
• Application for cancellation of removal

Citizenship, the final step

For U.S. citizenship, the applicant must:

• Be at least 18 years old.
• Have been lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence.
• Have resided lawfully for five continuous years in the U.S.
• Have resided within their state of residence for at least three months.
• Demonstrate that s/he has been a person of good moral character
• Demonstrate that s/he is attached to the principles of the U.S. Constitution
• Be able to read, write, speak, and understand words in ordinary English*
• Demonstrate a knowledge of U.S. history and government
• Take an oath to support the Constitution and renounce foreign allegiance
